How to improve Windows performance
PC hardware gets faster every year, yet in actual use, the machines often are quite slow. What are the causes? What can we do about it?
- If you are running Windows 95, 98 or ME, do not leave your computer running continuously. These operating systems will become progressively slower the longer you leave them on until you shut them down and start them up again. Ideally, these machines should be shut down each night.
- None of the Instant messaging programs should be running in your PC unless you are using, be it MSN, Yahoo messenger or AIM. They all use your systems resources and make your system slow. If you are not using them, then disable them.
- Make sure you computer is clean from all kinds of malware, spyware and viruses. These processes could be reducing your PC speed to a halt. If you don't know what these can do, contact someone who knows about it or for your peace of mind, contact professionals who know their job. - The more work you give your computer to do, the slower it works. A lot of people think that high-resolution pictures in the wallpaper, screen savers, dancing icons, AIM, Napster, Active Desktop and other such background software doesn't count because each thing doesn't use up all that much memory. The truth is, it all counts. If you want your computer to run faster, give it less to do. If you want your computer to do more things, don't expect speed. Always follow the Keep It Stupid Simple rule and you would be a happy user.
- Any process dependent upon the network will be slower than any process that runs alone on your PC. As network based services become more common on the PC, the PC will seem to be slower because all its processing power won't help it wait for the network any faster.
- Add more RAM. The one hardware change that is most likely to improve speed on a modern PC is increasing RAM. If you have less than 128MB RAM on a system running Windows 98, upgrading to that amount will almost certainly have a dramatic effect on speed. If you already have that much, you might increase speed by upgrading to 256MB RAM, though the effect is typically less dramatic.
